The Far side of the Moon

February 27, 2024 (1 year ago)

About this video

The side of the Moon we never see from Earth, often mistakenly called the "dark side," is more accurately referred to as the "far side." While it experiences periods of darkness just like the side facing us, it receives just as much sunlight overall. The reason we never see it is because the Moon is tidally locked to Earth. This means it takes the Moon the same amount of time to spin on its axis as it does to orbit our planet, resulting in the same lunar face always pointed towards us. This far side, however, holds fascinating secrets. It boasts a landscape significantly different from the near side, with a much higher concentration of craters and fewer of the large, dark plains called "maria." Exploring this hidden hemisphere has been crucial for understanding the Moon's formation and history.
